Experiencing Miracles

From the beginning of biblical history, we see that God fills the world with the supernatural, showcasing His power through miraculous signs and wonders. We see burning bushes that don’t burn up, a river turned to blood, the sun darkened, bodies of water parted, people healed of incurable ailments, and hosts of angels defending the people of God. In the life of Jesus, we see water turned to wine, people healed, food multiplied, men walking on water, and the Son of God himself rising from the dead. God is in complete control of the universe, and the very laws of science themselves have been implemented by God. He holds the universe together by the word of his power. He is able to operate however he wishes, which sometimes includes things that we can only describe as supernatural in our understanding.

In my life, I have experienced so many things that can only be described as miracles. This doesn’t mean I have personally seen people miraculous healed of gruesome injuries. This doesn’t mean I have seen rivers parted in two. This doesn’t mean I have seen God manifesting himself through a burning bush. But I have seen God raise people from the dead. And the best example I can give is me.

Yes, God raised me from the dead. I was utterly lost in sin and spiritually dead. But God changed me. He made me new person and gave me a new heart. I was only ever capable of caring about myself, my comfort, my feelings, and my desires and pride. To be honest, that is still an accurate description in some ways. But I am no longer enslaved to those things. My heart has been freed from the utterly destructive worship of myself. I am now being molded by God to love him and others even before myself.

Now, lest you think I am exaggerating, let me assure you I am being serious. First, I know myself. I know who I am in my own strength, and it’s not a pretty sight. I do not have ANYTHING good that I came up with on my own. The good parts of me were created and are sustained by someone else, and that person is Jesus Christ. If that is not a miracle, I don’t know what is.

The Bible has a lot to say about this miracle for all of us who are followers of Christ. In Ephesians, the Apostle Paul says that “even when we were dead in our trespasses, [He] made us alive together with Christ, and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” Our salvation is a spiritual raising from the dead- an enormous miracle when we consider the fact that those who love darkness are the ones who hate the light and refuse to come to him (John 3). This reality is clearly exhibited in our baptism. Baptism is an outward sign and seal of what occurs internally. Being washed with water shows how we are spiritually washed by the power of Christ through the Holy Spirit. We are justified before God, and our sins are covered by the blood of His Son. We are regenerated, out spirits being washed clean and filled with faith, and our minds and hearts are renewed with a commitment to follow our God and King. (Romans 6, 8, and 12).

This spiritual resurrection is a reality that we need to grasp tightly every single day. Our lives are not ordinary; they are quite miraculous. If we remain aware of the great power that works within us through Christ and his Spirit, then we would be a lot more confident and inspired when it comes to working all things in our lives for the glory of God. The Holy Spirit, who is the one who works within us, is the seal of the promise of God to save His children and to grant to them an eternal reign with his Son (Ephesians 1:13-14). If we fall into the trap of thinking our lives are mundane or that we are too weak or anything like that, we will really struggle to follow the will of God. But if we truly grasp the excitement of the miracle that happens every morning when we wake up in the love of God, even if that love is but a mustard seed in our hearts, then we would be able to better grasp the joy and strength that we have through Christ. We do not need parted seas or regenerated limbs or water turned to wine. We must simply look at how we truly joined to Jesus in his resurrection and rejoice in faith, hope, and love.
